Albany, NY -- Lost

It took at least half a dozen episodes, but I'm starting to enjoy Lost.

Strangely, I just keep waiting for Locke to say, "No, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!"

Albany, NY -- Cover Recording: Elliott Smith: Christian Brothers (Or What I Did With My Friday Night)

Haven't done a recording in several months, but was killing an extra hour or so tonight and recorded this one:

Christian Brothers (Elliott Smith cover)

Once again, done on my laptop's internal mic, this time on my Alvarez Regent, which I must've gotten for my 15th birthday...

Albany, NY -- Renew the West Wing

It's not going to happen; all of the cast members already appear to be moving on to other projects.

However, one guy is trying to make it happen through his site, "Renew the West Wing," and I'm certainly happy to support his efforts. Take a look.

Albany, NY -- Sports Guy Waxes Musical

This summer figures to be a summer of Pearl Jam for me; I'm going to three shows in May and wouldn't be surprised to see more later in the summer.

It also seems to be a summer of Pearl Jam for lots of other people; Worldwide Suicide is a huge hit, and the new album comes out in about 10 days.

Sports Guy pays tribute to PJ in his NBA playoff preview. Twenty-five points, twenty-five PJ lyrics:

21. On a weekah onawasta onawaya yeah.
And they called nine-a-said and I won't and they said
Andacalled out again
Anda reason on a levah gone buy no
I said I dunno wear on a bicycle back
Awaaaaaaaay hey! Can you see them?
Ow on the porch! Yeah, but they don't wait!

The most impossible-to-decipher Pearl Jam song ("Yellow Ledbetter," in which Eddie sounds like Jame Gumb for five straight minutes, although it's still one of their greatest songs, so you figure it out) goes to the most impossible-to-decipher Round 1 series: the Suns and the Lakers.

Is this one of the all-time goofiest matchups in playoff history? (I say yes.) Did the Suns look worn down over the past few weeks, to the point that they look vulnerable heading into the playoffs? (Yes, again.) Is anyone dumb enough to bet against Kobe in a seven-game series when nobody on the other team can guard him? (Probably.) Will it even matter? (I say yes.) Will the Suns just run them off the floor? (With Phil Jackson involved, probably not.) Will you feel much differently about the 2006 MVP Race than you did before this series? (I say yes.) Can Kobe break MJ's record for most points in a series? (I say yes). And can you see where I'm going here? (That's right: Lakers in six.)

Albany, NY -- Friedman Against War in Iran

From Tom Friedman's best column in quite a while:

which would you rather have: a nuclear-armed Iran or an attack on Iran's nuclear sites that is carried out and sold to the world by the Bush national security team, with Don Rumsfeld at the Pentagon's helm?

I'd rather live with a nuclear Iran.

While I know the right thing is to keep all our options open, I have zero confidence in this administration's ability to manage a complex military strike against Iran, let alone the military and diplomatic aftershocks.

As someone who believed — and still believes — in the importance of getting Iraq right, the level of incompetence that the Bush team has displayed in Iraq, and its refusal to acknowledge any mistakes or remove those who made them, make it impossible to support this administration in any offensive military action against Iran.

I look at the Bush national security officials much the way I look at drunken drivers. I just want to take away their foreign policy driver's licenses for the next three years. Sorry, boys and girls, you have to stay home now — or take a taxi. Dial 1-800-NATO-CHARGE-A-RIDE. You will not be driving alone. Not with my car.

Binghamton, NY -- 1906 San Franciso Earthquake Centennial

The economy's stagnating, prices are rising, stocks are falling, but at least 0.1% of taxpayers got back a little something extra this season. There was a deadly attack in Tel Aviv yesterday in which 9 people died and now the whole world's about ready to just completely give up on the Palestinians since Hamas doesn't seem to give a damn about the value of life. And with word out that we're planning on using "nucular" weapons on "Eye-ran," I figured we needed something a little lighter to distract ourselves until the world out there gets a little better.

So I bring news of the anniversary of an event that shook the world, or well part of it at least, the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Over 3,000 people died, making it equal, in raw numbers, to the September 11th attack. Then again, the population of the United States was much smaller 100 years ago, at 85.5 million -- about 28.5% as big as it is today. So scaling up the numbers, that's like saying the San Francisco earthquake was about three-and-a-half September 11ths. How come we don't take a moment of silence on April 18th each year?

Then again, that's far from being the most devastating event in the past 100 years in scale terms. Just going back in recent history, in 1998, Hurricane Mitch killed 18,000 people in Honduras. That was out of a population of about 6 million. That's like 300 September 11ths. Or the 210,000 people that died in Southeast Asia during the Tsunami -- that was about 60 September 11ths.

Of course all of that's nothing compared to the (last) time atomic weapons were used in a war when 1 of the 2 bombs killed 140,000 people in Hiroshima our of a population of about 350,000. That's 40,000 September 11ths. Crap, there I go again bringing up the nukes.
