Why Don't You Give a F**k? Republicans Think The 40-Hour Workweek Isn't Enough
I'm on a quick one-night stop in NYC after making a really quick jaunt to Baltimore and DC, and I found something to make me pull out the Why Don't You... feature. From Think Progress:
At a press conference today unveiling the stimulus proposal, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) justified the conservative plan to give tax breaks to corporations -- instead of working Americans -- by arguing that people actually like working long hours:
I am so proud to be from the state of Minnesota. We're the workingest state in the country, and the reason why we are, we have more people that are working longer hours, we have people that are working two jobs.
She thinks that's is a good thing? Well, the President does too:
Bachmann may be taking her cues from her bosom buddy President Bush, who on Feb. 4, 2005, told a divorced mother of three: "You work three jobs? ... Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that."
Unions spent much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries fighting for a 40-hour workweek... Republicans are trying to make that a thing of the past and are openly celebrating it. Why aren't we out in the streets over this sort of thing?
